Caliban represents the Native and Prospero represents the Explorers. In the following paragraphs I am going to write three topics that explain why this is. In the paragraphs it will say how Caliban treated Prospero and Stephano when they came and why. What Caliban thinks of Prospero now. And how Prospero treated Caliban and why he thought it was okay.
First is how Caliban treated Prospero and Stephano when they came and why. When Prospero came to the island Caliban treated him fair because he was nice and petted on him. To get Caliban to showed him the parts of the island where he could get fresh water and other things that would be beneficial for him to live on the island. Prospero showed Caliban how to make fire and what the moon was. Both Stephano and Prospero gave Caliban wine. When Stephano gave Caliban wine Caliban proclaimed that these men must be from out of this world and that they were gods. After fact of Stephano giving this wine to Caliban, Caliban swears that he will serve Stephano. Like in history the Native Americans thought that the explorers were gods because of the way they looked and the belongings that they brought with them. Also because there god was supposed to come back with different colored skin and riding a four legged animal.
Secondly is what Caliban thinks of Prospero now. After Prospero came Caliban came to hate Prospero and now thinks differently of Prospero. In the book Caliban says that the island was his until Prospero came and Caliban showed Prospero the island. Now Prospero will not let him go around the island and instead keeps Caliban pined up like a pig in this rock. Also now Caliban is afraid that if he disobeys Prospero he will get hurt because his magic is strong enough to control Caliban gods, so that if he disobeys than he will be stricken. Caliban dislikes Prospero so much that he wished that all the swamps, bugs, and disease fall upon Prospero and turn him into vial disease that Prospero is. He even later plots to kill Prospero with Stephano later on because he thinks that Stephano will be kinder and is a god. In history the Native Americans became the slaves of the explorers after they had showed them were every thing on the island is.
Lastly is how Prospero treated Caliban and why he thought it was okay.
When Prospero got to the island he was kind to Caliban and Caliban to stay in Prospero’s hut and looked after Caliban with human care till Caliban tried to rape his daughter. After that Prospero thought that Caliban would respond better to a whip than to human kindness. Also because of that Prospero now believes that Caliban is scum and a savage. Also when Prospero got to the island Miranda taught Caliban how to speak English because they were thinking that he does not have a language and therefore Caliban is a savage, and because of this all that Caliban can do differently is curse. In history the explorers tried to convert the Native Americans into Catholics because they thought that all of the Native Americans would go to hell if they did not. The explorers also took over their land because they thought that the Native Americans societies were just a mess and had no structure.
In conclusion that is why Caliban represents the Native and Prospero represents the explorers because of how Caliban treated them when they came. How Caliban thinks of Prospero now, and how Prospero treats Caliban now.
For the duration of the last quarter we spent the time writing poems to create our poetry books and the teen life project. In class we took up the time discussing what poetry is, the types of poems and poetry vocabulary. We also spent time writing sensory poems using pictures and a poetry packet.
Initially, we spent time discussing what poetry is. How poetry is everything in a figurative way. That it is just taking something and putting it in figurative language. Then we made lists of what “poetry is”. For instance, a circle of strait lines or a shadow creeping over yours. We took four of the “poetry is” lines and turned them into poems. Afterward, when we started a new class, we discussed that to write poetry you just write what comes first to your mind then change it later. To not sit there and think for ever about what you are going to write.
We took notes on alliteration, assonance, consonance, and onomatopoeia. We also took notes on internal rhyme, end rhyme, repetition, verse, iambic pentameter, sonnet, and free verse. Later on we took notes on stanza and the names for certain types of stanzas and we took notes on meter and the different types of meters. Lastly, we took notes on figurative language - simile, metaphor, and personification.
After a few classes, we went into the poetry packet and book to start writing poems. We went into the book and read poems that were examples of the type of poem we were about to write. Then in the poetry packet we would do an activity. For example we did this activity where the first couple words were filled in and in parenthesis the type of line or words that we were supposed to write were there. Another activity what we did was write what kind of rhyme scheme was used and what the metaphor was comparing in the poem.
During all this (everything listed above), we were continuously writing poems. We would be given a picture card and have to write some sort of sensory poem - sight, smell, hear, touch, taste and “the sixth sense” using the picture we were given. Other times we would have to write poems about certain things, or certain types of poems. We had to write haiku; and rhyme, rhythm, and repetition poems. We wrote poems with certain thymes such as, experience poem, street poem, message poem, invention poem, and poetry is poem.
Also during this, we were communicating with the other schools in the teen life. We wrote about our likes, dislikes and what we are concerned about in our environment, the international communities and why, on our blogs. Also were put into a group on a wiki about things going on in the communities. We went and researched about our theme and added information to the wiki. After researching we went and wrote a poem or poems about our theme (message poem). Finally we went and took a picture that represented our theme.
Lastly, we spent our time putting together our poetry books and getting ready for poetry night. We spent the last week writing invention poems, ballad poems, and anything else we needed to work on for finishing our books. We got into comities for food, invitations and other things. We brought food to the poetry night and should up early to get everything ready for the guests.
In getting the poetry book ready, writing poems, poetry night, class discussions, and in the teen life project I met certain ESLRs. While writing poems I met critical thinker because to write the poems I had to know about certain experiences or happenings to be able to write the poems in a way that sounded more interesting then the way it sounds saying it in literal language. I was an academic achiever in writing poems because during the quarter my writing got better as I thought of different ways of describing and using more interesting words to describe them. I was an effective communicator because in my poems I used my creative talents to make up my ideas for my poems. I was a self - directed learner because in writing the poems I would try things out that might not have been tried before.
In the teen life project I met critical thinker because I went on to sites and took from the writing what I thought was the most important aspects, to figure out what I should put on the wiki page, and used this information about video games to more understand and build more understanding on the things that I read or knew about. Also I met academic achiever in teen life because I showed that I could work with other people in my group and do the individual work that I needed to do. I met involved citizen in teen life because in my intro about my self I wrote about the concerns that I have in the environment and that I care about it. Another thing that I met was self – directed learner because I took my time to find out facts about video games and I set up time so that I would be finished with my poem and have taken the picture I needed for my part of the project.
In our class discussions I met effective communicator by listening respectfully and asking questions to help me understand and achieve insight on poetry.
In making the poetry book I met critical thinker because I had to figure out how to bind the book and also what the front and the back look like. Also I met effective communicator because I demonstrated that I was aware to the audience that I was writing for. Another ESLR that I met was self – directed learner by managing my time to finish by the due date and have everything I needed and by demonstrating organizational skills in the book.
Overall, we spent the last quarter writing poems to create our poetry books and doing the teen life project. Consequently, in class we took up the time discussing what poetry is, the types of poems and poetry vocabulary. We also spent time writing sensory poems using pictures and a poetry packet.
There is this team of researchers in Sweden that found out that patterns in your irises (the color part of your eye) show warm-heartedness and trust or neuroticism and impulsiveness. They read pits and lines in the irises of 428 people. The study participants’ irises were taken in close up pictures and they filled out a questioner on there personalities. In the pictures of the irises the researchers looked at pits and furrows which are these lines that form when your eyes dilate. And they found out that people with more pits are nice and trusting. And that people with more furrows were more likely to be neurotic, impulsive and give in to cravings.
Experts said the study showed that at least some characteristics of personality were determined by genes.
“Dr George Fieldman, principal lecturer in psychology at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, said: “This is very interesting. It shows that some aspects of personality have a genetic base and to identify them in the eye in this fascinating way is significant.
“It is surprising that this is possible. But it seems that the old aphorism that ‘the eyes are the window to the soul’ has some genetic basis.”
He said it opened up the possibility that security services could one day use the technique to analyze people.
Airports, including Heathrow, Manchester and Gatwick are already testing iris scanning to identify people - but are not to check personality traits.
But Dr Fieldman added: “Security services would have to use such technologies with some caution. You would not want to arrest somebody on the basis of their iris.””
